Earlier this year, Business Takeaways teamed up with steadfast The Apprentice finalist, Claire Young. With Claire’s expertise, we were able to bring one lucky winner an incredible mentoring opportunity. We invited bloggers, freelancers, start-ups and entrepreneurs – both existing and aspiring – to enter the Meet Your Mentor competition, with a chance to win an hour-long mentoring opportunity. The aim of the campaign was to inspire and encourage individuals to move forward with their business goals, be it future ambitions or short-term objectives.
Claire’s own business places thought-leaders and motivational speakers into educational institutions – schools, colleges and universities – encouraging people to maximise their potential and to start their own business. Claire knows a trick or two about what it takes to shape a successful project and has a focus on empowering young people and women, in particular. Her Girls Out Loud project succeeds in motivating, empowering and coaching young women to become brave, tenacious, and career-driven individuals, so we knew she’d be the perfect mentor for this contest.
The winner of the competition had similar business goals to those of Claire, a coincidence which worked out perfectly! Philippa Youlden has set up her own consultancy business, aiming to maximise opportunities for young people, providing training and educational resource designs to various local and educational authorities – she also has 10+ years of experience in sports development, which she specialises in. Philippa works freelance, combining her expertise and experience in sport, education and health services to help children, young people, and families reach their full potential in their communities. Check out her case studies to see what changes she’s been making recently.
We caught up with Claire and the winner of the Meet Your Mentor competition, Philippa, to find out each of their key takeaways from the mentoring session.
Claire www.claireyoung.co.uk – “I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Philippa and being involved in the mentor campaign. I’ve had a mentor since the beginning of my career and the support has really helped me to progress – I hope by offering my time to others, they receive the same benefit.”

– “The mentoring session was extremely useful. Claire and I spoke the week before to discuss the area I wanted to focus on during the session. Claire had done some prep beforehand which enabled us to get straight to the area of discussion – about me starting to explore and launch a new area of work, which I had been meaning to do for a while.
Claire’s fresh eyes and useful ideas helped me to get the project kick-started. It was great to have a subjective view on how it may work. Claire was also able to provide me with a few names to contact, and following the session, I have had meetings with a few new contacts. I’m also planning a launch event for November. Now the schools are back, I’m ready to get stuck in and put the mentoring session ideas into action. Thank you Business Takeaways and Claire for such a great opportunity.”
Philippa came away from the mentoring experience with the inspiration and confidence needed to pursue her business goals, and get started with her launch event.
Due to the volume of entries and interest the Meet Your Mentor competition generated, we’ll be running it again this month, allowing one more winner a fantastic opportunity to receive an exclusive, tailored mentoring session. We’ll be announcing our new mentor, and details on how to enter the competition, over the coming weeks. Sign up for our email newsletter or follow us on social to be the first in the know.
